The energy spectrum extends beyond 1020 eV and the energy gap between the highest energy event and the others is being filled up with recently observed events. The spectral shape suggests the absence of the 2.7 K cutoff in the energy spectrum or a possible presence of a new component beyond the 2.7 K cutoff. [S0031-9007(98)06893-8]

Evading the GZK Cosmic–Ray Cutoff

Explanations of the origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays are severely constrained by the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuz’min effect, which limits their propagation over cosmological distances. We argue that possible departures from strict Lorentz invariance, too small to have been detected otherwise, can affect elementary-particle kinematics so as to suppress or forbid inelastic collisions of cosmic-ra...

The Highest - Energy Cosmic Rays

The unexpected discovery of the cosmic microwave background by Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson in 1965 is now the centerpiece of our understanding of the Big Bang and the subsequent evolution of the universe. (See PHYSICS TODAY, November 1997, page 32.) The discovery also set off something of a race to verify one of its implications for cosmic rays. In 1966, Kenneth Greisen (Cornell University) ...

A Break in the Highest Energy Cosmic Ray Spectrum: a Signature of New Physics?

Recent experimental data from the Fly’s Eye and the Akeno array seem to indicate significant structure in the ultrahigh energy cosmic ray spectrum above 10 eV. A statistically significant dip has been established at about 5 × 10 eV. In addition, each experiment observed a different superhigh energy event above 10 eV separated from the rest of the data by about half a decade in energy. In this a...

Comment on “ Violation of the Greisen - Zatsepin - Kuzmin Cutoff : A Tempest in a ( Magnetic ) Teapot ? Why Cosmic Ray Energies above 10 20 eV May Not Require New

In a recent letter [1] with the same title, Farrar and Piran offered an explanation for the near isotropy of the arrival directions [2] of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) and the apparent absence [3] of the so called ‘GZK cutoff’ in their spectrum around 10 eV due to pion photoproduction on the cosmic background radiation (CMB) that was predicted independently by Greisen [4] and by Zatsep...
